ExMedz traces its roots back to “Digital Information Service,” a personal-import agency website for medicines launched in Japan in 1998 to support patients seeking treatments from overseas. At the time, Japan was beginning to face growing concern over the so-called “drug lag” — the long delay before new drugs were approved compared with other countries. In the early days of the internet, a business model that allowed people to purchase overseas medicines through a website was both novel and in great demand. As a pioneer of personal-import agency services for medicines, we were featured in the mass media and supported by many customers. One year after founding, in 1999, we incorporated with capital of 10 million yen, and continued to provide epoch-making services to the industry. However, as problems with personal imports came to light — such as the resale of imported medicines and accidents caused by careless use — and as online advertising of medicines unapproved in Japan came under regulation, Digital Information Service was split into a “management and operations” division and a “payment collection” division, and the management division became independent and relocated overseas. We chose the United States as our destination because it had the world’s fastest new-drug approvals and the largest number of items available on websites at the time. We registered as a corporation in Delaware in 2009 and moved to Las Vegas in 2010. Today, we broker pharmaceutical trade between pharmaceutical wholesalers around the world and medical institutions and research laboratories.
With explosive population growth and borderless access to medical information via the internet, patients around the world began assessing their own symptoms and treating illnesses through self-medication using medical products. Because this approach carries many risks, “order medication” — in which patients ask their physicians for the medicines they wish to receive (in Japan, the government established the Patient-Proposed Health Services system) — has now become mainstream. At the same time, many physicians themselves import excellent medicines from around the world to administer to their patients. These social expectations have brought a paradigm shift to pharmaceutical supply systems, moving us toward an era in which physicians worldwide can freely access excellent medicines and everyone can freely choose their own treatment — an era in which highly advanced, specialized medicine and order medication coexist.
